Description:

This reporter position is ideal for students who love writing and are outgoing. You will get hands-on, practical experience as a reporouter. An ideal candidate has prior experience writing, studied media/journalism and/or has worked in a student newsroom. Students who are interested in writing, news, current events, journalism, communications or multimedia storytelling should still apply.

We foster an objective, respectful and friendly environment in the newsroom and look for staff with that same perspective. Researching, writing and filing news stories in the Associated Press (AP) writing style for SUU News across print (University Journal), digital (SUU News), and broadcast platforms (SUU News Podcasts). Reporters cover campus events, student government, news, sports, SUU athletics, the arts, the outdoors and local community stories, working closely with student editors and Prof. Fogg to develop story ideas and meet publication deadlines depending on topic/sections. This is news, so there are deadlines and reporters must have a quick turnaround and be open to constructive criticism on stories. This is a great job for students who love to write and can adapt to a news writing style. The candidate must be able to attend weekly staff meetings in the SUU newsroom, usually on Mondays. Returning students can expect to continue working during the next academic year and can be promoted to an editor position. This is a great opportunity to build a portfolio and gain real newsroom experience that translates directly into a career in journalism, media or communication.

Responsibilities:

  • Pitch, research and write original news stories on a regular deadline schedule.
  • Conduct interviews with students, faculty, staff and community members.
  • Attend and cover assigned campus events, meetings and games, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Fact-check and revise stories based on editor feedback.
  • Learn and follow AP Style and SUU News editorial standards.
  • Assist with photography or social media content for stories when needed.
  • Position starts at the beginning of fall semester.

Qualifications:

  • Media, communication, English or social media majors preferred, but not required.
  • Prompt and on-time to scheduled events and deadlines
  • Writing and grammar skills, with a solid foundation in AP Style or willingness to learn it quickly.
  • Comfortable in interviewing and note-taking.
  • Comfortable working independently on assigned beats.
  • Clean and organized with deadlines and file management.
  • Experience with content management systems (WordPress or similar) (not required, but a plus).
  • Prior experience with a school newspaper, yearbook, or similar publication (not required, but a plus).
